CCE Paddling Club

2024 Fall Youth Kayaking Lessons

The Fall Season is almost here and it is a great time for paddling! The CCE Paddling Club is offering Learn to Kayak Lessons (Levels 1 to 2) at Cultus Lake from the beginning of September to the end of October. Kids will play games, learn kayaking skills and water safety and have a blast!

The CCE will also offer Slalom programs for those youth that have passed level 2. The Slalom program consists of 1 or 2 flatwater sessions per week and a river session.

The target age for our lessons is 8-17. Participants must be comfortable putting their head underwater and swimming in deep water while wearing a PFD. Participants should have a wetsuit. All other equipment is provided.

LESSON CURRICULUM

Our nine step levelled program, originally developed by our national sport body, Canoe Kayak Canada, is designed to ensure that water safety awareness, paddling skills, and confidence in every learner is achieved before advancing to the next level. Levels one, two and three, the foundation of the program, are taught exclusively on flat water before advancing to moving water in level four.

Flatwater

Level 1: These classes will embrace all beginners. Learn how to get in and out of a boat, launch independently, balance on the water, properly hold a paddle, reverse and forward sweep to pivot, stop, wet exit without a spraydeck, and paddle backwards. No prerequisites.

Level 2: These classes are for the learner who is ready to continue building their paddling foundation. Learn how to select a kayak and paddle that fits you, dry and wet exit with a spraydeck, forward and reverse paddle in a straight line, hold your tilted boat on its edge, draw to bow/stern while pivoting 360° and use safety river signals.

Level 3: This learner is ready to complete their paddling foundation on flatwater. Learn how to redirect your boat, change edges, move your boat sideways, weave through obstacles, high and low brace, roll, and perform a T-rescue. For the learners who are stable enough, we will introduce them to a slalom boat.

Whitewater

Level 4: These classes are for the learner who is ready to advance to gently moving water. Learn how to identify currents, eddies, and eddy lines and how to turn in and out of eddies, cross and spin in a current, wet exit in the river, and defensively swim. Prerequisite: Level 3.

SLALOM PROGRAM

The Slalom program is for those participants who have passed level 2 and interested in learning the Olympic sport of Canoe Slalom. It is not necessary to for youth to be competitive to join this program although fun races are part of the slalom training.

Is your child ready to take their kayaking to the next level? Does she/he/they want to have fun outside on the water and learn new skills? The goals for the group are to have fun, improve kayak skills and on-water safety awareness, to learn the Olympic sport of Canoe Slalom,  to paddle beautiful bodies of water and to take on the challenge of some informal slalom races. Paddling slalom gates is an excellent way to improve paddling skills for whitewater paddling, and a great choice even for those youth not inclined to competitive sports.

You can certainly just attend the Saturday session(s) and the race on Sunday or just the race. I do not believe registration is open yet.

    Where to stay
There is a camp site about a 12 minute drive to the Cedar River. Camping is $20 and Yurts with power and heat is $56(USD)  - https://thedyrt.com/camping/washington/washington-kanaskat-palmer-state-park
A hotel we have stayed at before is Larkspur Landing Bellevue. Small kitchenet, free Breakfast and they serve warm cookies! There is a safeway nearby.

$5-$10USD race fee - need to bring cash (USD) to the race if you do not register online.
$20CDN Training fees per day. The total for 3 days is $60, 2 days (Saturday and Sunday) would be $40 payable to the CCE.
